Well, the show in Wilmington was a blast. We had a ball and it really was a piece of cake, considering the three of us haven't played together since November. Everybody there, from the guy and gal who picked us up and took us back to the airport, to the people at the hotel, and of course, all of the folks on the crew and the festival organizers...they all treated us so kindly and made the whole experience enjoyable and easy.
Looking forward to more shows with the CJ3 where we are welcomed with such open arms.
Before I sign off...what is it with keyboard players this week?
I just want to say how sorry I was to hear about both Vince Welnick's and Billy Preston's passing.
Vince Welnick: What a talented guy he was. Vince was in The Tubes, played with Todd Rundgren's band for a while back in the late '80s and was with The Grateful Dead for it's last 5 years before Jerry Garcia passed away. I got to see Vince play with Todd several times and once or twice with the Dead. There have been reports that Vince had been suffering from a tremendous amount of depression over the last several years. I hope that he is now able to finally rest in peace. As the song says, "...may the four winds blow you safely home".
Billy Preston: The guy was a true genius and legend. I read somewhere that he was like the Jimi Hendrix of the keyboards. I couldn't agree more. His playing encomapssed just about every style of music but somehow it was still all rolled up to sound uniquely his. Although I never met him, Marcus Finnie, my good friend and the drummer in my trio here in Nashville, spent a lot of time out on the road with Billy last year before he got so sick back in November. What a special treat for Marcus to have played with such an amazing musician.
Thanks for all the awesome music and r.i.p. Vince Welnick and Billy Preston!
Until next time...
